FAQ

  • What are the benefits of hiring a birth doula?

Research shows that continuous labor support, particularly that of a doula, has many positive effects on birthing people and infants, which may include

    Increase in:

    • oxytocin (a key labor hormone)

    • comfort and mobility in labor

    • spontaneous vaginal birth

    • self-esteem, feelings of safety, and positive feelings about the birth

    • higher Apgar scores in newborn

    Decrease in:

    • pain and anxiety

    • length of labor

    • interventions such as: cesarean, medications for pain relief, Pitocin, and vacuum or foreceps-assisted birth

Doulas take an individualized approach to care. They recognize the varying physical and emotional needs of birthing people, informing them of their options. Many advocate for the needs and rights of their clients in the birth space. Doulas do not speak on their clients’ behalf, rather they work to enhance communication between birthing people and the rest of their care team.

  • Is a doula the same as a midwife?

Doulas and midwives have distinct, but complimentary roles. There is some overlap in the type of support they offer. However, there are some key differences. Studies show improved birth outcomes with both midwifery-led births and doula-supported births. The two roles work together synergistically to provide the highest level of support for birthing people.

Unlike midwives, doulas are not medical providers and do not perform clinical tasks such as taking blood pressure, fetal monitoring, or performing cervical exams. We do not offer medical advice, diagnoses, or treatment for health conditions.

While midwives oversee the health and safety of low-risk birth givers and infants, the doula’s role is centered around providing physical, emotional, and informational support to birthing people and their partners.

  • How does doula support compare to partner support?

When it comes to birth support, doulas and partners each fill a unique role. The partner, if present and involved, can provide the mother with an intimate type of comfort. Oftentimes, the partner is also a co-parent to the new baby, making them a perfect advocate for mother and child, and someone well-equipped to assist with decision making.

Partners play such a valuable role in the birth, yet many have little to no experience supporting a person in labor, which can leave them feeling overwhelmed or even helpless. As birth professionals, doulas offer an experienced and objective viewpoint and practical suggestions, helping the birth partner step into their role with with confidence.

With open communication, education, and support, a doula can put the partner at ease, sharing tools and tips for supporting the birth giver through each stage, enhancing their bond. Doulas provide reassurance to the partner, as well as and take some pressure off of them, allowing for breaks, while ensuring the mother gets continuous support. This can lead to a more positive experience for all.

Evidence Based Birth states, “The results showed a substantial improvement in outcomes for women who had both a birth partner and a doula, compared to having a birth partner alone.”

  • What if I don't have partner support?

Every birth experience is unique and a partner is not always part of the process. If you do not have a traditional partner, or your partner is unable to be present for your birth, doula support can be particularly impactful. Especially, given the research highlighting the importance of continuous labor support, which is not something hospital staff is equipped to provide.

Sometimes, a close friend or family member may attend the birth to offer support. This can be a very welcome addition. However, as mentioned in regard to traditional partner support, unless this person is specially trained in supporting childbirth, they may not have the tools to navigate the complexities, even if they have given birth themselves.

No matter what your birth team looks like, a doula can support each member, leading to better outcomes and a more positive experience for all involved.

  • I'm taking a childbirth education class. Do I still need a doula?

Yes! Comprehensive childbirth education plays a vital role in an empowered birth experience, but it is not a substitute for personalized, in-labor support. I am passionate about educating my clients about birth, and always recommend they take a thorough childbirth class to help them prepare, but learning the information is only one piece of the puzzle.

Trying to remember everything you learned, and knowing how implement it at the appropriate times, can be challenging. While birth is generally safe, it is not predictable. That’s part of the beauty of it, but it also means you can’t anticipate exactly how yours will unfold or what needs may arise. Even the more experienced birth givers and partners can greatly benefit from the support of a doula.

An experienced doula can help you navigate the unique pattern and process that is your labor and birth, while helping you stay present and grounded through each stage of your sacred journey.
